Kensington Palace Breaks
An utterly gorgeous building full of fascinating Royal history, Kensington Palace is well worth a visit.
The official residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the former residence of Queen Victoria, Princess Diana and Princess Margaret among others. With the magnificent King's and Queen's State Apartments – adorned with stunning paintings from the Royal Collection – and the famous Orangery Restaurant in which to enjoy afternoon tea, be sure to take your time to discover the Palace’s incredible royal secrets.
On the 24 May 1819, Princess Victoria was born at Kensington Palace. To mark the 200th anniversary of this event, Historic Royal Palaces will open two new displays charting her childhood and her life and influence as Queen.
Victoria; A Royal Childhood - Within the permanent representation of Victoria’s rooms at the palace, visitors will be able to explore the princess’ education through a display of remarkable objects relating to her early years, including a poignant scrapbook of mementos created by her governess, Baroness Lehzen. The exhibits will delve into her family life, friendships and bitter struggles during her upbringing under the strict “Kensington System”.
Victoria; Woman and Crown – New for 2019, visitors can continue to explore the story of Queen Victoria; in this temporary exhibition discover the private woman behind the crown. How did Victoria balance her role as Queen, wife and mother? Within these displays, visitors will learn how she harnessed the new age of photography to project an image of Imperial power across continents and document the minutia of family life. Learn how her 9 children and 43 grandchildren extended her influence across not only Europe but the whole empire. Rare survivals from Victoria’s private wardrobe will go on display for the first time including a simple cotton petticoat dated around the time of her marriage, and a fashionable pair of silver boots.
